What to Read Next Based on the 2018 Goodreads Choice Awards Winners

THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN! THE GOODREADS CHOICE AWARD WINNERS ARE HERE! Are you happy with the winners? Are there books you think got snubbed? Regardless, we here at NOVL are so excited for all the nominees and all the hard work that’s gone into these books. 2018 was such a rad year for the YA community!

If you loved the nominees that won awards, here are some more recommendations to add to your 2019 TBR (or 2018 if you’re a fast reader and like to live on the edge):

If you love The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas…

Read Tyler Johnson Was Here by Jay Coles

Last year The Hate You Give/Angie Thomas won the Goodreads Award for Best Debut Author…and now it’s won the Best of the Best category! If you liked THUG for the same reasons I did, you’re going to want to pick up Tyler Johnson Was Here next! Tyler Johnson Was Here was also one of the nominees this year for best YA fiction, and rightfully so: it’s a book that, like THUG, packs a punch with sharp prose and discussions that people are seeking to have. And I love that both of these books getting the attention they deserve!

If you love Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi…

Read We Rule the Night by Claire Eliza Bartlett

Children of Blood and Bone is kinda taking over the world. And now Tomi’s won the Debut Author spot! I can’t wait to see what’s next in store for her career ☺️. While you’re waiting for the next book, you might also like We Rule the Night, Claire Eliza Bartlett’s debut YA fantasy, coming April 2019! If (like with Children of Blood and Bone) you’re into fantasies inspired by history or mythology, you’re in for a treat with We Rule the Night! It’s inspired by the female fighter pilots of the Soviet Union’s Night Bomber regiment and set in an alternate magical Russian universe.

If you love Leah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli…

Read Amelia Westlake Was Never Here by Erin Gough

Ah! Becky Albertalli books make my heart flutter! Her voice! Her humor! Her relatable characters! If you liked Leah’s snarky, dry wit, then you should also try Amelia Westlake Was Never Here, which comes out next year in May! It’s set in ✨Australia,✨and I do love some bloody good Aussie slang.

If you love Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J. Maas…

Read Daughter of Smoke & Bone by Laini Taylor

I can’t believe that the Throne of Glass series is coming to an end 😱! If you need another fantasy with crazy world-building, you should check out the Daughter of Smoke & Bone series, Laini Taylor’s other YA series! I absolutely loved the setting when I first read it and was sucked in from page one.

If you love Vengeful by V. E. Schwab…

Read Illusive by Emily Lloyd-Jones

Okay, so Vengeful technically isn’t categorized as YA. But we’ll make an exception because it’s V. E. Schwab. If you’re looking for another fantasy with complicated anti-heroes, you should try Illusive! Super-powered criminals, an impossible mission, a dangerous race against time…what more do you need?
