Introduce Yourself

Hello! I’m Hannah, Senior Subrights Associate at LBYR, which mostly means I work on getting our books—everything from picture books to YA—translated into as many languages as possible. I can usually be found baking cakes, taking extremely long city walks, or doting on my cat Penny Dreadful.

Favorite Book of All Time

Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf, forever and always. It’s the most beautiful reminder of celebrating joy in the day to day. My favorite YA book is We Are Okay by Nina LaCour. (If you’re sensing a theme of very introspective books with cathartically hopeful endings after tragedy…yes, I have a type.)

Favorite LBYR Book

Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan. To-die-for descriptions of food, breathtaking fantasy world building, deep empathy for its characters, and an extremely swoon-worthy f/f romance… it’s perfect to me.

Book You've Been Meaning to Read for a While

Mansfield Park is the only Jane Austen book I’ve never read—I want to, but then, what do I do when there’s no more new (to me) Austen?!

A SIGNED BOOK ON YOUR SHELF

Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson. When I was little I used to carry my copy of Last Summer with Maizon around everywhere, and meeting her was completely surreal.

A LITERARY OBSESSION

Dark academia novels about insular friend groups who commit crimes. Sounds extremely niche, but there’s The Secret History by Donna Tartt, The Likeness by Tana French, The Basic Eight by Daniel Handler, Belzhar by Meg Wolitzer, A Great and Terrible Beauty by Libba Bray, Special Topics in Calamity Physics by Marisha Pessl, the upcoming A Lesson in Vengeance by Victoria Lee…I could go on.

BOOK(S) THAT YOU THINK EVERYONE SHOULD READ

Pet by Akwaeke Emezi. I read an interview where Emezi described thinking of books as spells we can cast on the world and having that inform their approach to writing for children. This is an extremely good spell about that the world could and should be.

MOST WORN-OUT (BUT WELL-LOVED) BOOK

Harriet the Spy by Louise Fitzhugh. It was the very first full book I ever read, and I still have the same copy, worn to pieces, that I re-read every year.

FAVORITE BOOK COVER

Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up With Me by Mariko Tamaki, illustrated by Rosemary Valero-O'Connell (whose art is on the cover). It’s so lush and evocative of uncertain young love, and the muted colors are perfect.
